    1. 1954 · Hurricane Hazel

      Made landfall near the state line as a Category 4. Myrtle Beach recorded its highest gust on record, 106 mph.

      Gusts reached 87 mph at Murrells Inlet. Waves destroyed Springmaid Pier, and Surfside Pier lost about half of its length.

      Set the state tropical-cyclone rainfall record, 23.63 inches near Loris. The Waccamaw River crested at a record 21.16 feet in Conway, and 361 homes in Conway and 1,580 in rural Horry County were damaged.

      Made landfall near Georgetown with winds up to 80 mph. Parts of the Cherry Grove, Pawleys Island, Apache and Second Avenue piers collapsed or were badly damaged.

    Up to $7,500

    For a roof retrofit that meets both SC Safe Home and IBHS FORTIFIED Roof standards. Households at or above 80% of area median income qualify for a $6,000 matching grant.

    State law requires coastal rating plans to include credits for wind-resistant construction. Amounts vary by carrier, and insurers must disclose them at every renewal.
